WHAT’S HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 ABOUT?
After Dracula’s daughter marries and has a son, the vampire struggles to accept that the boy may be a human, not a monster.
IS IT ANY GOOD? (GRADE: C+)
It lacks the freshness that made the original such a pleasant surprise, but Hotel Transylvania 2 has enough colorful characters and energetic animation to entertain the little ones. Grown-ups, on the other hand, will likely be checking their watches (or phones) as the predictable plot lurches forward, slowed down by an endless barrage of gags. Some of the humor is admittedly laugh-out-loud funny, but too many of the jokes fall flat. Nice emphasis on family, though.
IS IT OKAY FOR YOUR KIDS?
Hotel Transylvania 2 is rated PG. There’s some mild menace and amusing dark humor (lullabies about death, etc), as well some mild innuendo (a vampire twists the nipples of The Invisible Man as punishment and there’s joke about a hairstyle looking “like boobies”).
ANY WORTHWHILE MESSAGES?
We need to love and accept our friends and family for who they are, especially if they’re different. Dishonesty ruins trust. Forgiveness can heal families.
Are you into classic movie monsters? I highly recommend 1935’s Bride of Frankenstein.
