MY LITTLE PONY Family Movie Review

WHAT’S MY LITTLE PONY: THE MOVIE ABOUT?

When Tempest Shadow (Emily Blunt) and her dark army attack Canterlot, ponies Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Applejack and Fluttershy go on a quest to save their friends.

IS IT ANY GOOD? (GRADE: C+)

Despite the larger budget and star-studded cast, My Little Pony: The Movie comes off as little more than an extended episode of the TV series it’s based on. It does have a more polished look, but that’s the only real difference. This film feels like it had the potential to be so much more.

The travels through other cities where they find new characters, and even the new look of the ponies at one point, seem intended to introduce new toys rather than expand the Ponyverse. And the songs, while enjoyable in the moment, are forgotten almost as soon as you walk out of the theater. Personally, I think the straight-to-video My Little Pony: Equestria Girls movie had more heart than this theatrical release.

IS IT OKAY FOR YOUR KIDS?

This film is rated PG for mild action. There are some battles, the ponies are threatened and an evil character is destroyed. There is also, of course, no swearing or sexual content. This movie knows its audience and never crosses the line. If your kids are a fan of My Little Pony, they’re probably going to love it.

ANY WORTHWHILE MESSAGES?

The My Little Pony franchise centers around friendship, and this movie primarily focuses on love and forgiveness. Even though the main characters are wronged by Tempest Shadow, they still try their best to understand her and forgive her time and again.

Fans of the themes of friendship, kindness, and forgiveness found in My Little Pony will find all of that and more in Disney’s Aladdin! Watch it again with fresh eyes, it has many salient messages for families. RENT OR BUY IT HERE.
