The sister of con artist Danny Ocean puts together an all-female crew to pull off a jewel heist.
IS IT ANY GOOD? (GRADE: B-)
First things first: the cast is excellent. Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, and Rihanna, along with everyone else, are clearly having fun and bring a significant amount of charm to this caper flick. Sadly, while the movie is elevated by the actors, it isn’t worthy of them.
It’s not funny enough, there’s almost no tension to the heist itself, and the plot is too formulaic and predictable. Still, Ocean’s 8 has style, it has class, it has some laughs, and it has beautiful people. If that’s all you need, you’ll have a good time. But we’ve seen it all before, and better.
IS IT OKAY FOR YOUR FAMILY?
Ocean’s 8 is rated PG-13. It has one f-word and a handful of other profanities. There is some bathroom humor (vomiting offscreen), a makeout scene lasting a few seconds (whether or not sex follows is unclear). Crime, deception, and thieving are glamorized, but in a comedic tongue-in-cheek way that suggests that none of this is to be taken seriously.
