FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention: Looking Back on that Incredible First Year

By Jonathan Decker, Clinical Director, LMFT

In 2013, Salt Lake City had its first superhero, sci-fi, and fantasy convention, and that thing exploded out of the gate. With an estimated 80,000 attendees, FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention had the largest-ever turnout for an inaugural convention of its kind. In commemoration, here’s a look back at the convention’s record-setting first year (photos by C.J. Jackson; video courtesy of KJZZ Movie Show; get info and tickets here).

On the History of Superman panel, I got to chat with the Man of Steel himself (Dean Cain, Lois and Clark).

There’s plenty of interesting things to see, including balloon-Hulk.

Dino was a hit with all ages.

Weta’s Workshop took us behind the Lord of the Rings.

While my brother-in-law embraced the Dark Side.

Ray Park, AKA Darth Maul from Star Wars, is actually a really nice guy.

Henry Winkler, “The Fonz” from Happy Days himself.

Hobbits aplenty…

… and Halo heroes.

They packed ‘em in for Spiderman, X-Men, and Avengers creator Stan Lee…

… who did not disappoint.

Vendors sold all sorts of things, and authors signed their work (ahem).

Trekkies welcome…

… along with Star Wars baddies…

…Batman characters…

…Street Fighters…

…Han and Padme…

… and assembled Avengers.

Kevin Murphy, of Rifftrax and MST3K, was just as funny in person.

If you’ve never been, you need to go! Bring the family. Even if you’re not a “geek,” the energy, fun, and people watching make it more than worth the while. Learn more and get tickets at fanxsaltlake.com.
